For instance, New Caledonian crows have been observed crafting tools, such as hooked sticks, to extract insects from hard-to-reach crevices – a feat that requires foresight, problem-solving, and a level of abstract reasoning (Weir et al., 2002). Similarly, African grey parrots have shown an impressive ability to categorize objects based on their properties, understand the concept of “same” and “different,” and even engage in simple numerical tasks (Pepperberg, 1999).

The remarkable cognitive abilities of birds are often attributed to the challenges they face in their natural environments. Coping with variable and unpredictable conditions, such as finding and storing food, navigating complex social landscapes, and adapting to changing habitats, has driven the evolution of advanced problem-solving skills and flexible intelligence (Emery & Clayton, 2004a). Additionally, the relatively large size of the avian forebrain, particularly in corvids and parrots, is believed to play a crucial role in supporting complex cognitive processes (Jarvis & Consortium, 2005).

Measuring Avian Intelligence

Assessing the intelligence of birds is a complex endeavor, as it requires a nuanced understanding of their cognitive capacities and how they may differ from our own.
